People with small plots often assume that there is little that can be done to enhance their garden. But good design can transform the tiniest of spaces. Whether you have a typical new-build with a postage stamp lawn, an inner city terrace with a backyard patio, or a small cottage garden, careful thought and planning will be rewarded. In this example, a really modest back garden has been made to feel much larger and spacious than it really is. The lawn has been kept to a minimum and surrounded with lushly planted flower beds. A careful selection of structure-giving shrubs and colourful perennials draw the eye to a route through the garden and give a valuable sense of perspective. At the same time, there is room for a swing seat, a dining area and a discreetly placed washing line. And there’s still space for the family labrador to roam happily.
