Water Gardens

Water has been an essential part of garden design since earliest times. Rills, fountains and ponds and even lakes have always been valued for aesthetic effect and their therapeutic value. Nowadays, a renewed concern  for wildlife also makes water something high on the list of desirable garden features

This new pond was an important element in a five stage project for a Wiltshire country house.  The brief was to create a new front garden, a  kitchen garden with its own greenhouse, an outdoor cooking and entertaining area and a wild garden linked  to an existing orchard and woodland walk.  The pond was created from scratch using a large butyl liner and feeding in rain from the garage roof.  The edges of the pond are made of steel and original Cotswold stone from the site as well as new stone built into a retaining wall. A decked seating area on one side will be lightly shaded by a clump of newly planted Himalayan birch and it has been carefully positioned to catch the evening sun. A cascade water feature brings the tranquil sound of moving water as well as ensuring good aeration for the pond itself. Carefully chosen water plants and marginals have been planted in the water and around the pond edges and they are already attracting dragonflies and butterflies.
